The cave is twenty minutes by water from Portimão, the better part of an hour from Albufeira, and unreachable on foot — the clifftop path above ends at the hole. What changes is the craft you arrive in, and only one of the three may put you on the sand.
Kayak or paddleboard, onto the cave beach
Paddle craft are the only boats allowed to land under the oculus. Guides raft up outside and go in one at a time, and you get ten minutes standing on sand that has no path to it. The swell decides how calm those ten minutes are.
Speedboat: fast, cheap, nobody lands
A rigid inflatable out of Portimão marina reaches the cave in twenty minutes, noses inside, holds for photographs and carries on down the cliffs to Marinha and Carvoeiro. Wettest ride, shortest morning, lowest price on the coast.
Catamaran: deck space, swim stop, shade
The big cats hold outside the cave mouth and trade the entrance for room to sit, a swim stop in a quiet cove and a bar. The one to pick when the wind is up and the small boats are slamming.

Ponta da Piedade is a headland of ochre stacks, arches and bottle-green water, worked by small open boats that are out for barely an hour and cost less than lunch. It is the trip for a morning when Benagil is booked solid or the swell has shut it.
Past Faro the cliffs stop and the lagoon begins.
Ria Formosa is sixty kilometres of tidal water held in by a chain of sand islands — Armona, Culatra, Farol, Deserta — with salt pans, oyster trestles and flamingos standing in the shallows. Boats leave from Faro and Olhão, and the timetable belongs to the tide.

Set pieces the Algarve does not share.
Cliffs and beaches are everywhere in southern Europe. A cave with a skylight over its own beach, a clifftop crossing of seven dry valleys and a tidal lagoon with inhabited islands are not.
The Benagil Oculus
A sea cave whose ceiling collapsed, leaving a clean round skylight over a private crescent of sand. It sits a fifteen-minute walk from Benagil village and is completely unreachable on foot — the clifftop path ends at the hole, and people have been hurt trying to climb down it. Water is the only way in, and only paddle craft may land.

The Seven Hanging Valleys
Six kilometres of clifftop between Praia da Marinha and Praia de Vale Centeanes, crossing seven dry valleys that stop dead at the sea. It passes the arch on every postcard, a blowhole and the Alfanzina lighthouse. There is no shade and no water on the route, which is why guided walks leave early and why nobody sensible starts at two in the afternoon.

Ria Formosa
A protected lagoon running from Faro almost to the Spanish border, held in by four sand islands and two peninsulas. Salt is still raked here, oysters grow on trestles you sail between, and the water moves a couple of metres twice a day — a low-water crossing takes a different channel and a different amount of time.

Book these before you land at Faro.
Most of this coast can be arranged from a bar in Albufeira the night before. These cannot. They run on small boats, tide windows, capped landings and border crossings that do not move for your flight.

Atlantic swell shuts the Algarve coast. Go inland.
This is the Atlantic, not the Mediterranean. A north-westerly swell closes the cave to small craft at a few hours’ notice, and a flat-calm winter morning can still be cancelled by lunchtime. The inland half does not care: the cork and eucalyptus hills behind Monchique, the red castle at Silves, the co-ops pouring last year’s wine, and a long table of clams.
